Chances_for_development_and_investment_attraction_in_Mekong_-_1VIETRADE - The MeKEZ is making a break-through in developing the socio-economic infrastructure and the education–training in order to get ahead of the region’s development requirements in the future. The plan for the territorial development of the Mekong River Delta from now to 2020 is to develop concentratedly, creating dynamic areas and strongly developed economic centers, in which, the development nuclei are Can Tho City and those provincial urban areas along national highways and provincial roads, and the sea belt and those border-gate economic zones along Cambodia border.

The Government and local authorities have paid much attention to developing the infrastructure structure of the MeKEZ. In the coming time, many infrastructure works will continuously be invested, such as: completing the Ho Chi Minh City–Trung Luong–Can Tho –Ca Mau Expressway, completing the upgrading and widening of essential highways of 1A, 80, 91, N1, N2, South Ha River, Quan Lo–Phung Hiep route and the remaining bridges on Tien and Ha Rivers and other big ones; synchronously improving and upgrading the road and bridge system in the region, especially the roads to industrial parks and clus ters, and the spur-roads connecting to national highways and expressways; upgrading and widening several district roads having economic development potentiality and high goods transportation capacity into provincial roads; upgrading the inter-communal paths into district roads in order to ensure the clear traffic with localities in the region; preparing for the land fund to build the coastal interregional route from Thailand to Cambodia and into Vietnam through Kien Giang, and Ca Mau Provinces, etc.

These works will create favorable conditions the development of sea economy, especially aquaculture, shipbuilding, shipping, tourism, urban areas and inhabitants, etc. contributing to the rapid development of the MeKEZ.

Seaway: The river passage through Dònh An Rivermouth into Can Tho Port is being dredged to receive 10,000-ton ships and up; Quan Chanh Bo Canal and An Thoi Port (Phu Quoc) are being built; other ports are being newly built in association with upgrading the existing ports and shipyards in order to exploit the advantages of the large seaports and river-mouths to meet the requirements of cargo transportation and exportation of the region.

In the near future, there will be at least two deepwater ports that are able to receive 50,000-ton ships, which is the advantageous condition for seaborne cargo transportation to other countries, significantly reducing the freight rates when not using the port cluster of Ho Chi Minh City.

Railway: In the near future, the Ho Chi Minh City–Can Tho railway route will be invested to meet the increasing transportation requirements of the Mekong Delta. Other necessary conditions will also be prepared for the opening of the railway route to Ca Mau.

Airway: There are now four airports in the MeKEZ, in which, the Can Tho International Airport is being upgraded and widened, and the remaining three ones are Phu Quoc, Ca Mau, Rach Gia. Another airport is being built in Phu Quoc and will become an international airport when completed. Therefore, in 2020 there will be two international airports operating in the MeKEZ and attracting a large amount of international visitors to this area, and making it convenient for the transportation of the people as well as domestic and oversea investors.

Besides, the aviation industry is upgrading and widening the existing airports. Those projects for building mini airports used for air taxis to serving tourism are being researched and are finding investors. These airports, after being completed, will create favorable conditions for the travel between localities in the region, economic centers, tourist centers, new residential areas in the Mekong Delta and provinces of the Southeastern region, Cambodia and Ho Chi Minh City, etc.

According to the plan for the traffic network of the Mekong Delta to the year 2020 and a view to 2030, the regional traffic network will be completed, meeting the increasing development requirements of the region. The 6 regional lengthwise highways and 12 widthwise highways connecting to lengthwise highways, provincial roads, district roads and in combination with waterway and air traffic will form a convenient traffic network of the region, creating favorable conditions for the cargo transportation and the socio-economic development of the region.

The provinces in the MeKEZ have advantages on developing processing industry, especially aquatic products processing, gas-power-fertilizer, construction materials, farm products processing on medium and small scale, etc. They also have advantages on developing services, especially tourist services.

Many key works have been completed: the Highway 1A, N1, N2, Quan Lo - Phung Hiep route as well as lengthwise and widthwise routes and waterway routes have been upgraded and widened; those bridges of Can Tho, Rach Mieu, Ham Luong have been completed, Can Tho International Airport and other airports have been upgraded, etc. These have made a new look for the traffic of the region and remarkably shortened the traveling time between areas. Investors now need only 20-30% of the time in comparison with before to reach the MeKEZ.

These are basic advantages that attract more and more domestic and overseas investors to the region. Many big projects in all fields have been paid attention to by foreign investors.
