The overall social-economic development in Ca Mau Province - Part 1

VIETRADE - The province’s GDP reacheThe_socialeconomic_development_overall_of_Kien_Giang_Province_to_2020_-_1d 13,020 billion VND in 2009, 14,600 billion VND in 2010, making an annual increase of 13.5% in the period of 2006 - 2010 (the set target is 12 - 12,5%). In which, agro-forestry-fishery increased by 6.5% (set target is 6%), industry-construction 22.9% (set target is 17%), and service 14.1% (set target is 17-18%). The per capita GDP reached US$ 1,030 in 2009, US$ 1,100 in 2010.


The density of agriculture in the economic structure has decreased from 52.46% to 39.3% since the beginning of 2006; industry-construction increased from 24.21% to 35.5%; service from 23.33% to 25.2%. The movement of the agricultural production is on the right direction and effectively.


Those essential economic industries and fields in the province compass are being modernized and industrialized, concentrating on technical infrastructure, increasing production competence and stepping up applying technology advancement, sticking production to the market, gradually increasing the competitive ability and the effectiveness of production and commerce.


The enhancement of the economic components has positively contributed to the economic growth and social security; the marine economic potentiality and ecotourism are being planned in order to be effectively exploited.


The total social investment in the period of 2006-2010 is estimated at 50,000 billion VND, making up 60% of the total GDP. Besides, the province also concentrates on enhancing the planning quality and the management of the socioeconomic development planning; combining the economic development with the social problems solution, environment protection, national defense and security.


The situation of the development of economic industries and fields

- Industry and small industry

The total production value of the industry-small industry in the past five years has increased 17.8% annually. In which, the traditional industries (processing and manufacturing) increased by about 9%, the energy industry has a high growth rate. The structure of industrial subdivisions has positively moved, the output value of electricity and gas production and distribution has increased from 1% to 30% in the total output value of the whole industry.


The competence of industrial production has rapidly increased; the two power plants (with the total output capacity of 1,500 MW) have been stably operated; many aquatic product processing plants have been newly invested and expanded, the total processing and installation output capacity reached 150,000 tons of finished products per year (a 1.37-fold increase in comparison to 2005); the fertilizer plant and other materials and building components producing businesses are being invested.


The small industry production in the urban areas and rural trade villages have been maintained and well developed, supplying many kinds of equipment, labor instruments and household goods to meet the production and consumption requirements in the province.


- Agro-forestry-fishery

In the past period (2006-2010), the agro-forestryfishery production of the province has stably developed. The application of technological and scientific advancement on production and the protection of plants and domestic animals against diseases have been reasonably considered. The average income from aquatic products is 42 million VND/ha/year, agricultural production reaches 40 million VND/ha/year. The resources management, exploitation and protection and natural disasters prevention are actively implemented.


- Aquatic products: The area for aquatic products keeps increasing (the area for breeding shrimps increases by 16,000 ha), reaching 294,695 ha in 2009, in which the area for breeding shrimps is 265,153 ha, mainly extensive farming and economic-farming (shrimp-rice, shrimp-forest), the average output capacity is 376 kg/ha. The form  \of extensive farming of shrimps for high yield has achieved initial success. With an area of 2,500 ha, the av erage output capacity reaches 800 kg/ha/crop. The area for breeding industrial shrimps reaches 1,300 ha, the average output capacity is 4.75 tons/ha. The movement of breeding fish together with other aquatic products has also developed, step by step escaping from the monoculture of shrimp.


The fishery encouragement policy and the application of scientific technology on aquatic products breeding in Ca Mau have gradually been implemented in many localities, therefore the people’s technique and experience are improved. The infrastructure serving the breeding areas is also invested, especially the irrigation system. The aquatic breeds quality control has been intensified, which helps limit the death rate of shrimps in breeding, and enhance the effectiveness. The average income value from breeding aquatic products reached 35 million VND/ha, estimating at 42 million VND/ha in 2010.


Although facing many difficulties in there career, most of the fishermen keep on seagoing to exploit aquatic products in combination with protection of the national waters. The total aquatic products output reached 326,000 tons in 2009, 390,000 tons in 2010. In which, the shrimp output reached 112,000 tons and 116,000 tons in 2009 and 2010, respectively.


- Agriculture: Agricultural production has been restored and developed, especially, rice planting. Some new rice varieties have been put into production effectively. The area of one-crop rotational cultivation of rice on the shrimp-feeding field has rapidly increased, which is a stable development direction that the people are responding.


The rice area under cultivation in 2009 was 136,000 ha, the rice output in 2010 reached 520,000 tons. Vegetables, fruits and other plants are being invested in some regions.


Although being affected much by epidemic diseases, the scale of livestock and poultry is still maintained with 250,000 pigs, 1.4 million of poultry. The agricultural production services are expanded. The agricultural encouragement, veterinary, and the application of technological scientific advancement in production have contributed to the enhancement of output, quality, and effectiveness of the agricultural production.


The structure of agricultural production has moved towards increasing the rate between feeding and agricultural service: In 2010, cultivation is 70%, breeding 20%, and agricultural service 10%. The average value of income from agricultural land reaches nearly 40 million VND/ha/year.


- Forestry: The province has organized the apparatus of forestry management and production towards concentrating on main bases (two businesses), enhancing the allotting of land to the people, implanting the project of production planning and reallocating the residential area in the indigo forest. The new area of forest keeps increasing by over 2,000 ha every year, the forest area was 100,700 ha in 2009, and 102,900 ha in 2010 because of the re-planning of the three kinds of forest (the set target was 110,000 ha).
