Export revenue to the UAE: The dominance of mobile phones and accessories

VIETRADE - Vietnam’s key exports to the United Arab Emirate (the UAE) – mobile phones and accessories- experienced growth in value contributed to the overall increase of export revenue in the first four months of 2016 to this market.

 

Statistics by the General Department of Customs showed that export revenue to the UAE totaled USD 526.98 million in April 2016, down 9.6% against the previous month. However statistics by the end of the first four months experienced a 8.8% growth against the same period of last year with USD 1.9 billion.

Key exports to the UAE include: assorted mobile phones and accessories; machineries, devices, tools and spare parts; computers, electronic products and accessories; footwear; garment and textile; agroforestry products and seafood…

 

Out of this, assorted mobile phones and accessories outstood with USD 416.78 of export value in April, down 14.6% against the previous month. The first four months’ export value for this commodity group to UAE was USD 1.54 billion, up 15.2% against the same period of last year, accounting for 81% of the total export revenue.

 

Despite the significant decrease in export value in the first four months, computers, electronic products and accessories still ranked the second place with revenue of USD 95.2 million, down 38.8% against the same period of last year. However, this commodity group only accounts for 5% of the Vietnam’s total exports to the UAE in the first four months. In April alone, Vietnam exported USD 30.9 million in value of computers, electronic products and accessories to the UAE, up 69.1% against March 2016.

 

Export of pepper to the market was in the third place with USD 15.19 million in value in April 2016, up 13.3% against March 2016. In the first four months of this year, total export revenue for pepper to the UAE was USD 37.99 million, down 7.4% against the same period of last year, accounting for 2% of the total export value to the UAE.

 

Other export items experienced growth in the first four month to the UAE market include: assorted footwear with USD 34.76 million, up 11.3%; machineries, device, tools and accessories with USD 24.27 million, up 57.3%; handbags, wallet, suitcases, hats, umbrellas with USD 11.95 million, up 32.8%; cashew nuts with USD 7.87 million, up 17.2%; rice with USD 6.36 million, up 10.6%; fruits and vegetables with USD 5.89 million, up 90.3%; confectioneries and products from cereal with USD 3.71 million, up 8.4%; products from iron and steel with USD 1.23 million, up 32.6% and paper products with USD 945,539, up 48.1% against the same period of last year.

 

In contrast, some other commodities experience a decrease in export value in the first four months, such as: garment and textile with USD 32.29 million, down 16%; fishery products with USD 20.19 million down 2.7%, gems and precious metals and products with USD 13.51 million, down 0.2%; assorted iron and steel with USD 7.4 million, down 19.1%; plastic products with USD 4.8 million, down 0.6%; transportation vehicle and accessories with USD 3.17 million, down 64.9%; tea with USD 1.04 million, down 28.5% against the same period of last year.

 

According to industry experts, in the time to come, the UAE will continue to be Vietnam’s largest export market in the Middle East. The two nations have set target to raise two way trade revenue to USD 7 billion in 2016, in which, Vietnam’s export revenue to the UAE would be USD 6.5 billion.

 

In achieving the target, Vietnam’s Commercial Consulate to the UAE will continue trade promotion and market expansion activities, introduce Vietnamese food, fruits and vegetables into the super market system of the UAE…

 

Apart from that, the Commercial Consulate to the UAE also updates relevant Ministries, agencies, provincial Industry and Trade Departments, industrial organizations…on such issue as deceptive and fraudulent trade by businesses registered in the UAE, to alert Vietnamese enterprises.
