vietnam_plastics_investmentVIETRADE - Vietnam’s plastics’ industry, having grown 30% in recent years, has become a major export earner. After coal and rice, plastics has been the third fastest export-growing sector in Vietnam despite the recent climb in oil prices and growing demand for inputs that caused the cost of plastic resins to increase.

Vietnam’s plastics’ industry is able to meet most of the domestic demand, and is oriented towards domestic items and packaging. Demand for plastics is rising around the world, and the Vietnamese consumer is now wanting more sophisticated plastic products.

Ho Chi Minh City is where most of the plastics industry is found; hence, nearly all related seminars and trade fairs are held there.

Vietnamese plastics’ corporations, especially the small- and medium-sized, are major producers of daily-use household products. Packaging accounts for 55% of plastic output, and nearly all the plastic packaging used in Vietnam is domestically made.

Vietnam’s production output is 40 kg of plastic per person. Plastic output per capita of Malaysia is estimated at 5 times higher than Vietnam’s, Singapore 10 times more, Thailand 3, and Indonesia 2 times higher than Vietnam’s.

vietnam_plastics_investment_1In 2009 total plastic imported into Vietnam was 2.18 billion tons valued at USD 2.19 billion. Vietnam mainly imports  paper materials and equipment, and exports fnished products to Singapore, EU, America, Australia, and nearby countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Japan and Taiwan.

Vietnam produces no plastic resin, with the exception of PVC and master batch.

Expect to see this industry stressing investment in high-tech products, high-productivity plants, and in BOPP, PP/PE, and PS.
