Land resource

An Giang has 37 different kinds of land, forming 6 main groups of land, in which the group of alluvial land takes the most part–151,000 ha (making up 44.5% of the natural land) that is very favorable for crop plants; alum alluvium land is over 93,800 ha (making up 27.5% of the natural land); the group of local developed and ancient alluvium land is nearly 24,724 ha (making up 7.3% of the natural land); the remaining is alum land and others.

 

Forest resource

An Giang has over 583 ha of natural tropical forest, most of which is large leaf canopy trees with 154 kinds of valuable and rare trees belonging to 54 families. Besides, there are 3,800 ha of indigo forest. The forest area has been rapidly reduced after a time. The provincial authorities have paid much attention on afforestation recently. The fauna of An Giang is also rich with several valuable and rare species.

 

Aquatic products resource

An Giang has two big rivers of Tien and Hau that belong to Mekong River system. Together with the system of canals, ponds and lakes, these are huge aquatic product resources that are favorable for the development of fish breeding in floating houses and ponds, and aquaculture in fields.

 

Mineral resource

An Giang has more mineral resource than other provinces of the Mekong River Delta such as granite, sandstone, tile clay, kaolin, peat, shells, puzzoland, feldspars, bentonite, sand, gravel, etc. that meet the requirement for construction material for the region. However, the province must pay attention on the balance between exploitation and the protection of the ecology and environment.

 

Tourist resource

An Giang is a province that has such specific characteristics as having both plains and mountains, minerals, and long lasting historical monuments that bear the hallmarks of ancient wet rice culture. Therefore, An Giang is considered a tourist potential region, especially ecotourism, convalescence tourism, sight-seeing tour, and pilgrimage tour.

 

Tourism has recently been the province’s key industry. Therefore, the province is concentrating on investment and exploitation in order to rapidly develop such historical cultural monuments as Sam Mount (Chau Doc Town), Cam Mount (Tinh Bien District), Tuc Dup Hill (Tri Ton District), Oc Eo archaeological site (Thoai Son District), and President Ton Commemorative Area. Besides, the province also has tourist sites as Soai So Lake, To Mount (Tri Ton District), Giai Mount, Tra Su Indigo Forest Ecotourist Area (Tinh Bien District), and other festivals such as Dolta Festival (the Khmer people’s annual bull-racing festival taking place from August 29 to September 1 of the lunar year), Khmer people’s Chol Chnam Thmay Tet, Ramadan Festival of the Cham people taking place from September 1 to September 30, etc.

Human resource

An Giang has a population of about 2,149 million people (in 2009), in which female makes up 50.69% and the rural area makes up 71.6% of the population. The natural birth rate in 2009 was 1.2%; the people in working age keep increasing.

 

The province provides employment to about 35 million labor every year; the educated labor makes up 30.28% (in 2009); the vocationally trained labor makes up 20.33%. The monthly average income per capita is about 1,800,000 VND.

 

With such human resource training bases as An Giang University (interdisciplinary training, having over ten thousand students, a placing providing university- and collegegraduated human resource), Health Intermediate School, An Giang Vocational Training College, two vocational training intermediate schools (Chau Doc Town and Tri Ton Minor Ethnic Boarding-school), vocational training centers, provincial and district continuing educational centers, etc., the province provides 3,500 university and college graduates, 3,500 vocational training intermediate graduates, and 53 post-graduates yearly.

 

Besides, there are about 8,000 university and vocational training intermediate gradutes coming from Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho City and Vinh Long Province etc. working here. (the end)
