VIETRAoverview_of_kien_giang_-_1DE - Kien Giang Province has a multiform topography with many rivers, mountains, islands, a long coast line and abundant natural resources. Its advantageous geographic location and favourable natural conditions bring many economic potentialities and advantages in such fields as agricultural and silvicultural economy, nautical economy, buiding materials producing industry, agricultural and aquatic product processing industry and tourist industry with many famous landscapes, typical historical and cultural relics. Moreover, as a southwest gateway to the Gulf of Thailand, Kien Giang also has great potentialities in terms of border gate economy, shipping and international trade.

Geographic location: Located in the southwest of Vietnam and belonging to the Mekong River Delta, bordering Ca Mau and Bac Lieu Provinces to the south, An Giang Province, Can Tho City and Hau Giang Province to the east and southeast, the Gulf of Thailand to the west and the Kingdom of Cambodia to the north with a 56.8 kilometers long border line. Kien Giang is one of the intersection points that link to other Southeast Asian nations, especially to Cambodia and Thailand by land, by sea and by air.


Area: 6,346.27 km2


Climate: Kien Giang has the tropical monsoon climate which is hot and wet all year round. The rainy and stormy season usually is from August to October with the annual average rainfall of 2,146.8 mm; the annual average temperature is from 26.40C to 280C. December is the coldest month without hoarfrost. Kien Giang is not directly impacted by storms; however, the rainfall from storms makes up a great part of its annual total rainfall, especially in the end of the rainy season. Its climate and weather have basic advantageous conditions which other northern provinces do not such as having few natural disasters, having not cold weather, having not directly landing storms, having abundant light and heat quantity… which are very ideal for many species of crop plants and domestic animals to grow.


Topography: Kien Giang has multiform topography with over 200 kilometers long coastline, more than 100 small and large islands, many rivers, streams and mountains; the mainland part is rather even and plat, lowering bit by bit in the direction of northeast - southwest.


Administrative divisions: Kien Giang is divided into one city (Rach Gia), one town (Ha Tien), and 13 districts (Kien Luong, Hon Dat, Tan Hiep, Chau Thanh, Giong Rieng, Go Quao, An Bien, An Minh, Vinh Thuan, Phu Quoc, Kien Hai, U Minh Thuong, Giang Thanh).


Population: 1,688,288 (2009)

Population density: 267/km²




Kien Giang has a network of road, water and air transport linking with other parts of the country and other nations in the region, creating good conditions for the home province in economic exchange and development.


Thesedays, some road constructing projects are on the go and some others will soon be carried out such as the South Coastal Corridor Road, the Ho Chi Minh Road, the Phu Quoc Island’s Roads, the Lo Te – Rach Soi Expressway, and the Upgrading of Highway No.61,… Kien Giang’s two airports, Rach Gia and Phu Quoc, are in good condition with daily routes to and fro HCMC, meeting the travel demand of people and investors.



All of Kien Giang’s districts and towns now have access to electricity. Electricity supply is mainly from National Grid; some plants have private power supply sources such as Sao Mai Cement Company and Ha Tien 2 Cement Company. In the future, a thermoelectric plant will be built at Kien Luong District to meet the domestic demand and export to neighboring countries.



There are 13 waterworks all over the province with designed capacity of 60,700m3/day, of which those in Rach Gia City make up for 34,000m3/day. In the short term, 87% of the fresh water demand for production and daily activities of the local people are met,…


Post and Telecommunications

Kien Giang has a rather fast-developed post and telecommunications network along with the development of electricity and transport network. The network of post offices and agencies has reached the countrysides, remote areas and islands. All districts, wards, towns now have telephones. Such forms of services as mobil phone, broadband internet are provided in almost every district, ward and town within the province.


Public health

Up to now, the provincial public health network has been reinforced and accomplished, covering all the communes; the task of preventive public health, population and family planning has been concentrated, meeting the health care demand of provincial inhabitants. Medical stations work all day long to serve the people’s need of first aid; in 2009, the number of standard medical stations was 120 in 145 communes, accounting for 84.5% of the total number of medical stations. There are 130 medical stations, 15 general clinics and 14 hospitals in the whole province. In addition, there are 1,455 private units practising medicine and pharmacy, in which Binh An Private Hospital having the scale of 200 beds with modern medical equipments and machineries, helping to raise the quality of health care, medical examination and treatment.


Education and training:

Kien Giang now has four colleges, one university (Branch of Nha Trang Aquaculture University in Kien Giang), one vocational education school and eight vocational training centers. Every year, the provincial vocational education system meets the vocational learning need for about 24,000 labors on an average. In 2008, the ratio of vocationally trained labors was 15.40% compared to 6.06% in 2001. In 2015, it is expected that 401,837 labors will be trained, raising the ratio of vocationally trained labors up to over 40%. Basically, Kien Giang’s education and training system is having remarkable progress; educational material facilities were consolidated; the ratio of thatched classes was lowered to 4.5% and there are no more “night-shift” classes.
