Together with other provinces in the region, over the past years, Quang Tri has been invested much by the State. Many preferential policies have been applied to Quang Tri, so that the economic potentialities of the province have a new growth: the Lao Bao Special Economic Zone has had a new growth rate; the infrastructure of Dung Hà South and Quon Ngang Industrial Parks, Hien Luong, Cua Tung, Khe Sanh, Lao Bao Tourist Routes, etc. has been built attracting more investment; the transport system, electric system, water supply and sewage system, post-telecommunications are incessantly upgraded; such social matters as hunger eradication and poverty alleviation, public health, education-training, culture-sports are also paid attention to.

The geographical advantages and economic potentialities gained over the years are creating basic foundations for Quang Tri to enhance the economic cooperation in the nation and integrate into the region and the world as well as speed up the socio-economic development in the coming time.

Soil and forest resources

According to the statistics, in 2009 the natural area of Quang Tri is 474,699.11ha (making up 1.43% of the national natural area): farming land is 301,993.75ha, non-farm land is 41,421.31ha, spare land is 131,284.05ha. Besides, Quang Tri also has abundant forest and floristic composition resources: in 2009, the province has 220,797ha of forest land with the total reserves of about 11 million cubic meters. The forest here has 1,053 species belonging to 528 branches, 130 families, in which there are 175 kinds of wood trees. The fauna system is also profound and diversified. There are 67 species of animal, 193 species of bird, 64 of reptile amphibian (belong to 17 families, 3 orders). The artificial forest is 85,820ha. In general, the quality of forest is good with an average growth rate. The concentratedly and intensively farmed forest consisting mainly of acacia auriculiformis, acacia mangium, acacia auriculiformisxacacia mangium, etc., has rather high economic effects; new kinds of plant have been imported and planted in the cultivating forest; some local species of tree such as bassia, black cassia, hopea odorata have been planted in protective forest. The area of pine forest is about 25,000ha, in 2010 there was 1,990 tons of pine resin exploited.

Marine resources

Marine resources is one of Quang Tri’s specific characteristics. The coastline is 75 kilometers long with two important estuaries of Tung and Viet. The exclusive economic zone is 8,400 square kilometers with a vast fishery ground that is rich in high economic value such as lobster, cuttlefish, crab, holothurian, seaweed, and some other kinds of fish and precious coral. The reserves of seaproduct in this sea is about 60,000 tons with the annual exploited output of 17,000 tons. The area of alluvial land along rivers is over 4,000ha, especially, there is about 1,000ha of coastal surface area. There are areas of alkaline soil and sand soil that are suitable for rearing all kinds of aquatic product and seafood.

Moreover, Con Co Island, which is 28 nautical miles away from the territory and takes an important position in economy and national defense, is building a fishing port and a fishery logistic service center serving for the provincial and regional ships. There are several wind-shield roadsteads which are suitable for the building of ports, shipyards, anchorage areas such as Cua Viet, Cua Tung. There are many coastal beaches, landscapes, historic revolutionary monuments that can be served for tourism such as beaches of Cua Viet, Cua Tung, My Thuy, Trieu Lang, Vinh Moc Tunnel, etc.. Moreover, about 100 to 120 kilometers away from Quang Tri coast, there is a methane field near Con Co Island with great reserves (about 60-100 billion cubic meters). If this gas is mined and conducted into the territory, Quang Tri will be the nearest province to be able to receive it, so it will enhance the processing industry from gas and new technological materials.

Having diversified marine resources, Quang Tri has great conditions for the development of general marine economy such as fishering and aquaculture; fishery logistic services; commodity ports and maritime transport, sea and island eco-tourism. On the base of harmorniously developing the maritime industries, the province must follow the general orientation of the region and the country and associate with the development of the East-West economic corridor in order to effectively exploit the potentialities of the sea and islands.
