VIETRADE - Situated in the middle of the Central Vietnam, in the key economic region of the Central including (Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Binh Dinh), Quang Nam province was formally reestablished on January 01, 1997. The geographical location has offerred Quang Nam province many favorable conditions in the economic relationship and exchange not only with localities nationwide but the neighboring countries as well. Furthermore, Quang Nam is one of few localities throughout the country owning airport, seaport, railway and national highways, and is also the pioneer in applying the open economic model in the country with attractive investment incentives (Chu Lai Open Economic Zone); possessing two cultural heritages (My Son sanctuary and Hoi An Ancient Town) recognized as the world cultural heritages. Therefore, it can be said that Quang Nam province occupies many potentials, great chances for a strong economic development.




Geographical location

Situated in the Central Vietnam, about 860km from Hanoi Capital to the North and 865km from Ho Chi Minh City to the South. It shares border with Da Nang City to the North, the East Sea to the East with more than 125 km coastline, Quang Ngai province to the South, and Kon Tum province and Lao People's Democratic Republic to the West. Quang Nam province has 18 district-level administrative units consisting of 02 cities (Tam Ky, Hoi An) and 16 districts (Bac Tra My, Duy Xuyen, Hiep Duc, Nam Giang, Nam Tra My, Nui Thanh, Phu Ninh, Phuoc Son, Que Son. Tay Giang, Thang Binh, Tien Phuoc, Dai Loc, Dien Ban, Dong Giang, Nong Son). Tam Ky city is the economic - politic - cultural center of the province. It has natural area of 10,406.83km2 and population of approximately 1.5 million.



Located in the tropical zone, the annual average temperature is 25.40C, the highest temperature in summer is not excess of 24oC, annual average numbers of hours with sunshine are 1300 hours. Annual average rainfall is 2000 - 2500mm, but it doesn't evenly distribute by the time and space, more rain in the mountainous areas than the plains, mainly occurring in September - December, accounting for 80% of annual rainfall; the rainy season falls in the stormy season, so the storms happening in the Central usually cause landslide, flash floods in the mountainous midland districts and flooding in the riparian areas. The average humidity is 84-85%.





Quang Nam province terrain inclines gradually from the West to the East, forming three types of ecologic landscapes such as the high mountains in the West, midland in the center and the coastal plain. Hills and mountains make up for 72% of the natural area with many high mountains of 2,000m. In addition, the coastal area to the East of the Yangtze River includes sand dunes spreading from the Dien Nam, Dien Ban to Tam Quang, Nui Thanh. The topographic surface is divided by rivers as Thu Bon, Tam Ky and Yangtze Rivers.


Traffic and infrastructure

Road: At present, some national highways passing through Quang Nam province area are Ho Chi Minh Trail, National Highways 1A, 14B, 14D, 14E with the length of 400km. The provincial roads consist of 18 routes with total length of 500km. Especially, the national highway 14 is can lead to the Lao People's Democratic Republic via Dac Oc Border Gate (in Nam Giang district).

Railway: 95km of the North-South Railway passes through the area of Quang Nam province.

Sea Route: Quang Nam province has Ky Ha seaport - a deep-water seaport situated in Chu Lai Open Economic Zone and close to Dung Quat Economic Zone (Quang Ngai Province). From here, goods may be shipped to other countries and is also a convenient stopover of international maritime transport routes.

Airway: Currently, Chu Lai airport becomes one of six most modern airports in Vietnam, capable of serving kinds of aircraft with great tonnages such as: Boeing, Airbus etc. In the future, Chu Lai airport shall serve for international flights transporting passengers, cargo in the North Asia, Pacific.

Medical network: Quang Nam Province currently has two provincial-level hospitals, 24 polyclinics, 13 district-level hospital and hundreds of commune, ward health stations.

School system: There are approximately 10 high schools, colleges and many occupational training centers. ( to be continued)
