Cashew export reached 2.5 billion USD in 2015 PDF Print

VIETRADE - That was the confirmation of Mr. Nguyen Duc Thanh, Chairman of Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS). His statement was based on the fact that within the last nine months, exports of the leading agriculture and seafood products of Vietnam remained quite with export value of only 10.29 billion USD, decreased by 7.2% in comparison to the same period in 2014. Coffee witnessed the most significant drop by 32.2%, rubber 13.7% and rice 17.7%. Meanwhile, cashew export surged in both quantity and value.

 

According to the most recent report of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in September only, cashew export volume was estimated at 30 thousand tons with value of 218 million USD, making the total export volume of the first nine months of 245 thousand tons, increased by 7.8% in volume and 20.6% in value in comparison to the same period in 2014.

 

It is notable that the average cashew export price in the first eight months reached 7,271 USD/ton, increased by 12.48 % in comparison to the same period in 2014. The U.S., Netherlands and China continued to be the three biggest cashew import markets of Vietnam. Markets with remarkable value increase comprised Germany 80%, Thailand over 51%, the U.S. over 35% …  

 

Favorable export as well as limited supply has had positive impacts on the domestic market. Relatively high buying price of dried cashew of 37,500VND/kg in Binh Phuoc is an evidence. Overall, within the first nine months, the domestic cashew market slightly went up to 37,500 – 37,800 VND/kg from 36,000 VND/kg thanks to the increased export price and demand.  

 

VINACAS estimates that Vietnam will export about 320 thousand tons of cashew kernel with the value of 2.5 billion USD.

 

From now till year-end is when the cashew consuming needs surge in all market globally; therefore, it is feasible to achieve the above mentioned cashew export value. The main cashew export markets of Vietnam so far remain the U.S., Netherlands and China, accounting for 61.17%. Markets with rapid growth in value include Germany, Thailand, the U.S. and Netherlands. The average cashew export price of Vietnam in this August was 7,271 USD/ton, increased by 12.48% in comparison to the same period in 2014.

 

To ensure sustainable development for the cashew sector, in the last few years, cashew garden cultivation and recovery grafting program introduced by VINACAS and actively steered by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for its widespread implementation has been going miles in improvement of cashew’s productivity and quality.  

 

Until now, Vinacas has opened 190 demonstration sites in total under cashew garden recovery grafting model with budget plan of more than 2 billion VND. Out of 190 sites, 90 are at Binh Phuoc; 65 at Dong Nai, 20 at Lam Dong; 15 at Binh Thuan. Because of the project’s positive results, demonstration sites are planned to increase in the coming time.

 

Around the issue of sustainable development for the cashew sector, in a speech at the recent Preliminary Conference on production, cultivation and seed recovery grafting, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh confirmed that Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development promulgated policy to consider cashew as the focus for investment. The Ministry will promote the steering and coordination with local levels in cultivation, cashew garden recovery together with stricter seed management for improvement of cashew’s productivity and quality. 

 

According to “Cashew sector development planning until 2020 and direction until 2030” approved by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in early Feb 2015, the 2020 objective is to achieve stable cashew planting area of 300,000 ha and average productivity of 1.5 tons/ha. At the concentrated planting area of key regions, productivity aims at more than 2 tons/ha, total cashew production at 400,000 tons.  The rate of well-processed cashew kernel products achieves 20%, oil processing from cashew shell 50% and export revenue 3 billion USD.

 

The direction until 2030 is to continue to stable the cashew planting area, to focus on cultivation and to apply science technology for productivity, quality and production effectiveness improvement. The national average cashew productivity reaches 2 tons/ha and 2.5 tons/ha at the concentrated planting area of key region. The rate of well-processed cashew kernel products achieves 40-50% with export revenue above 3 billion USD.

 

The key regions for cashew planting with an area of about 200,000 ha was identified at Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Binh Thuan and Ba Ria - Vung Tau provinces. Other areas of around 100,000 ha include Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Đak Nong, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, An Giang, Kien Giang and Tra Vinh.
