2015 Veggie and fruit exportation: 2 billion USD within reach PDF Print

VIETRADE - The total export value of this sector in the first nine months of 2015 reached more than 1.4 billion USD, increased by 16.5% in comparison to the same period in 2014. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association (Vinafruit) forecasted that given the current export rate, it is within reach to achieve 2 billion USD in 2015 from fruit and vegetable exportation. 

 

Fruit and vegetable export revenue within the last five years has been growing at a high rate with an average of 26.5% annually, from 439 billion USD in 2009 to nearly 1.1 billion USD in 2013 and 1.5 billion in 2014. 

 

According to PhD. Nguyen Huu Dat, Director of the Center for Post-entry Plant  Quarantine 2 (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), Vietnam is exporting approximately 40 types of fruits, equivalent to over 1.6 million tons, to 40 countries and territories all over the world. Of which, dragon fruit accounts for the majority (over 997,000 tons) following by watermelon (nearly 300,000 tons), logan (over 100,000 tons), lychee (over
70,000 tons)...

 

Particularly, since the penetration to strict markets in 2008, exports of high quality fruits have been witnessing continuous growth over the year. While fruit export to strict markets reached more than 3,000 tons in 2014, the same result was achieved after only the first seven months of 2015.   

 

Fruits such as dragon fruit, ramputan, logan and lychee continue to be expanded to high-end markets. The most recent expansion was mango to Japan and it is expected that star apple and mango would enter the U.S market by end of this year.

 

According to Mr. Dat, fresh fruits are the most high-end among agriculture products and Vietnam still has room for development. For example, after dragon fruit and ramputan…, Vietnam’s logan is being favoured by the U.S. comsumers after the first shipment was approved to enter the market.

 

Within the first nine months of 2015, total export value of this group was more than 1.4 billion USD, increased by 16.5% in comparison to the same period in 2014. Meanwhile, highly demanding markets such as the U.S., Japan, and Australia … are leaving the door open for several types of fresh fruits from Vietnam.

 

Out of over 1.4 billion USD of fruit and vegetable export within the last nine months, the 2015 fresh lychee export revenue contributed not a small amount. Statistics of Agriculture and Rural Development department of Bac Giang province showed that the 2015 total productivity of lychee of the province was 195.000 tons, 45 percent of which was exported and gained an amount of foreign currency up to 80 billion USD.     

 

“Lychee price has increased from 3,000VND/kg in 2014 to 5,000VND/kg and a number of new markets including the U.S., England, France, Japan, Australia, Korea, Canada and ASEAN countries… leave the door open for fresh lychee from Vietnam. As a result, the lychee export amount reached 85,500 tons.” said Mr. Duong Van Thai, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Bac Giang province.

 

Until now, Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables have been exported to more than 40 countries and territories but China remains the main and decisive import market to fruit and vegetable export value.    

 

Within the first 8 months of this year, China imported fruit and vegetables from Vietnam with the value of 748.05 million USD, increased by 139% in comparison to the same period last year, and accounting for 64.2% the total export revenue of the sector. Main products exported to China include mango, banana, dragon fruit and ramputan…

Following was Japan with export revenue of 49.8 billion USD, accounting for 4.1% and increased by 1.3% in comparison to the same period last year. Korea ranked the third place with a value of 47.59 billion USD, increased by 22% and accounting for 3.9% total revenue. There was an increase in revenue of almost all markets in comparison to the same period last year, notably the export to Cambodia where the revenue was only 4.78 million USD but with the highest growth rate of 215.7%.

 

In this Oct, Vinafruit will organize a group of enterprises to attend China Fruit and Vegetable International Exhibition (IFresh 2015), combined with conducting a survey of supermarket chains/retailers system in China.    

 

After China, markets such as the U.S., Australia, the Russian Federation, Italy and Hungary … are the targets of Vinafruit and enterprises. “The timeline for vegetable and fresh fruit penetration to those markets is all from now till end of 2015.” said Mr. Huynh Quang Dau, Vice President of Vinafruit.
