VIETRADE - The introduction ceremony of Vietnamese’s Cat Chu mango in Japan market was launched by the Embassy of Vietnam in Japan and AEON Corporation on 7th November 2015 at AEON Mall. This is the first time that fresh Cat Chu mango has been exported to Japan and hit shelves at AEON’s supermarket chain.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to South Korea Mr. Nguyen Quoc Cuong highlighted that the penetration of Cat Chu mango into Japan market was to concretize agreements between leaders of both countries during the visit of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to Japan in July 2015. The presence of Cat Chu mango in the heart of Japan supermarket chain is great news for Vietnamese farmers and open up opportunities for fresh fruits of Vietnam to promote itself in Japan market.

Cuong also showed that the presence of Vietnamese mango in AEON supermarket would provide Japanese customers more options for their choices of fruits and advertise to Japanese people about the abundance and freshness of Vietnamese fruits.

Representative from Vietnam Trade Office in Japan Mr. Nguyen Trung Dung shared that in the first export load, a total of 3.5 tones of fresh mangoes have been exported to Japan market. As planned, fresh mangoes of Vietnam would be sold at 209 branches of AEON Mall in Japan with two price levels (taxes included): 429 yen per a mango (equivalent to 77,000 VND) and 645 yen per a mango (equivalent to around 116,000 VND).

Dung also said that the export of fresh mango to Japan would be stimulated continously and by the end of this year, the export volume is expected to reach 80 tones shipped by sea and airline.

According to a representative from AEON supermarket in Chiba Prefecture, mango is a favorite fruit category of Japanese consumers. However, the price of Japanese mangoes is quite expensive while that of Vietnamese is much cheaper. In addition, the sweetness of Vietnamese mango fit for the taste of Japanese people, which makes AEON hopes that Cat Chu mango would become a high-selling product in AEON supermarket’s system. A report shows that hundreds of Japanese customers expressed their satisfaction with delicious and bland flavor as well as eye-catching color of the Cat Chu mango. Many of them bought large quantities of the Vietnamese mango.

Ms.Uuru - Sale Supervisor of Vietnam’s stall at AEON supermarket said that the majority of customers tasting Vietnam mango were very surprised because of its bland flavor.

The president of AEON - Mr. Noriyaki Murakami expressed his satisfaction because the Cat Chu mango was introduced successfully in Japan and widely welcomed by Japanese consumers. Meanwhile, he also confirmed that this would be a positive signal for Vietnam and hoped that more Vietnamese products would be put on shelves in AEON supermarket chain.

In addition to white-fleshed dragon fruit, Cat Chu mango is the second fresh fruit to be exported by Vietnam to the highly regulated export market. According to experts, it took five years for the authorities of Vietnam to prepare dossiers and set up a disease-control process to meet all requirements of the Japanese side.

Considering the successful penetration of Cat Chu mango into Japan, Dungz expressed his expectation that Japan would continue to receive more fruit products of Vietnam, satisfying Japanese consumers’ demand as well as the Vietnamese manufacturer’s expectation.
