There was a decline in the coffee import revenue of major markets in 2015 in comparison to 2014. Of which, import revenues of Belgium, India and Philippines dropped by 42.87%, 41.18% and 36.64% respectively compared to the same period last year. The degradation of world coffee’s price which prevented Vietnamese coffee export was the reason behind this. In addition, weather changes including early rain during coffee harvest and water shortage due to drought during coffee development period resulted in crop losses in some regions. Moreover, because of increased labour and fertilizer cost, fewer fertilizers were consumed by the farmers, leading to lower productivity than expected. The increasing quantity of old coffee together with low productivity resulted in 20% reduction in 2014/15 total output.  The intense competition from Brazilian coffee is another cause. Therefore, according to the estimation of U.S. department of Agriculture (USDA), our total export revenue of fresh coffee would fall from 25 to 20.34 million bags in 2014/15 season.

2015/16 Coffee Export Forecast

In line with rising instant and roasted coffee output in Vietnam, USDA’s forecast indicated an increase in export revenue of both products. 2015/16 instant coffee export of Vietnam is projected to achieve 1.5 million bags, an increase by approximately 17%, compared to the current season thanks to the rapid growth of domestic instant coffee production and trading industries. Exports of Vietnamese roasted coffee will see major changes in 2015/16 compared to the previous season. USDA predicted 2015/16 roasted coffee export to achieve 550,000 bags, a growth of about 20% compared to present. Reasons include the introduction of high-quality roasted Robusta coffee to customers by some suppliers and export efforts of others to improve their revenue.

Also according to USDA’s prediction, 2015/16 coffee export revenue of Vietnam will recover and rise by 30% due to over-expected coffee output and clearance sales of coffee stocks by farmers.
