Hanoi enjoys positive eight-month economic growth PDF Print

VIETRADE – Ha Noi enjoyed positive economic growth in the first eight months of this year with good performance seen in all key sectors of industry, trade, agriculture as well as tourism and services, statistics from the municipal People’s Committee revealed.


Hanoi’s industrial production index expanded 6.5% in the reviewed period, Of which, the mining industry rose 7.1%. The manufacturing and processing sector surged 6.6%. Electricity production and distribution registered a 6.1% increase while the water supply and waste treatment sector recorded growth of 3.1%.


From January to August, the city’s export value witnessed a yearly rise of 8.5% to US$7.6 billion with major export items including electronics, petroleum, machine and equipment and transportation. Its eight-month imports reached US$19.16 billion in the period, surging 22% compared to last year’s corresponding period.


According to the data, the city earned VND202.56 trillion from retail trade and service revenue in the first eight months, 2.1% higher than same period last year. Of the total, revenue of retail sales contributed VND48.78 trillion, up 3% month-on-month and up 15% year-on-year.


Up to 16,714 new businesses were established in the city since the beginning of this year, with combined registered capital of approximately VND130 trillion. These figures marked yearly surges of 14% in number of enterprises and 4% in level of registered capital.


In the reviewed period, some 93,000 business registration applications were submitted online, accounting for 71% of the total. Only 177 companies went out of business while nearly 2,500 enterprises reactivated.


Statistics showed that over 223,900 enterprises are operating in the capital city.


In eight-month period, the city non-budget investment projects, worth VND71 trillion; 22 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects with a total investment of VND60 trillion; and US$1.74 billion in foreign-invested projects. So far, Ha Noi has had 128 PPP projects with a combined investment of VND333 trillion, of which eight projects have been completed and 120 others are underway or preparing procedures.


In term of tourism, Ha Noi has welcomed more than 2.3 million foreign visitors, up 23% year-on-year. The city also served 6.5 domestic holiday-makers, up 5%. In eight months, revenue from tourism services earned the city VND40 trillion, an increase of 9% compared to last year. 


In the remaining months, Ha Noi will focus on speeding up consumption, exchanging goods with other localities, and promoting exports while supervising the domestic market and developing tourism products.


The city will approve a planning scheme for developing industrial clusters by 2020 with a vision to 2030 while encouraging more investors to build local industrial parks.


Top priority will be also giving to implementing measures to remove difficulties for investors and attracting more large domestic and foreign-invested projects./.
