Mozambique promotes cooperation with Can Tho City Print

VIETRADE – Mozambiqueis seeking to foster multi-field cooperation with Mekong Delta city ofCan Tho, especially in agriculture, fishery and personnel training which the city has advantages.


In a working visit to Can Tho in mid-September, Mozambican Ambassador to Vietnam Gamiliel S. J. Munguamble met Vice Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung to discuss the issues of promoting cooperation between the two sides in the near future.


At the meeting, the ambassador highly values the diplomatic relations betweenVietnamandMozambiquein recent years. He hoped to further promote the friendship and cooperation between the two countries in general and with Can Tho City in particular, especially in agriculture.


The diplomat saidMozambiqueand Can Tho City have similarities in climate conditions as well as common concerns in agricultural production and expressed the desire to cooperate and exchange experiences in the production and processing rice and the farm produce.


Can Tho City is the forth largest city inVietnamand the economy hub in the Mekong Delta region.


Munguamble said Mozambique highly appreciated the efficiency of high-tech agriculture models in Can Tho City and wanted to learn from the city’s experience as well as expand technology transfer in this filed.


At the same time, he hoped Can Tho City will work as a bridge betweenMozambiqueand other agricultural powers in Asia such asJapan,ThailandandSouth Koreawith whom the city is promoting extensive cooperation.


The ambassador hopes the two countries’ governments will strengthen bilateral cooperative programmes with participation of leading agricultural experts to share experience and knowledge in production, processing and improvement in productivity and quality of agricultural and fishery products.


In addition, he suggested setting up a trade and investment network between Can Tho City andMozambique, explaining that the two sides have big potential to boast international cooperation.


RepublicofMozambiqueis a country in theSoutheast Africawith the economy largely based on agriculture. Since 2001,Mozambique's GDP growth has been among the world's highest at an average annual rate of 6%-8%.


The ambassador also proposed to establish twin relationship between Can Tho andMoatizeCity, which has been developed into an economic area exclusive for agricultural businesses inMozambiquewith corporate tax preference at zero percent during 2016-2020.


This city is home to manyMozambique’s prestigious universities and agricultural research institutes, along with fields steered for high technologies which need Vietnamese support.


For his part, Vice Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung said Can Tho is willing to create the most favorable conditions for cooperation withMozambiqueand ready to share experience in agricultural production and development.


The Vietnamese official said Can Tho plans to organize visits of municipal authorities to Mozambique, especially Moatize City, to discuss further cooperation with the Mozambican government.


Agriculture is a spearheaded of Can Tho owing to application of high-tech in production. The city is the centre for purchasing and processing agricultural and aquatic products in the country with agricultural export turnover of about US$1.2 billion annually.


Dung also wants to strengthen cooperation between universities between the two sides.
